It would darken half of the photo. What I was doing when taking the photo in this tutorial was increasing the light on the subject(my daugher) and keeping the same light in the background. She was in the shade of a building that was behind me. In the first photo she is actually darker and so the exposure is off and the background is blown out. In the second shot, she is actually being brightened and because she has more light falling on her the light in the background shows up darker.
What I would suggest you do is recreate the shot if you can. Take a subject outside and put it in the shade. The background should have light on it. Then shoot a shot without your flash and see what happens. After that shoot the same shot with your flash on and see what happens. Thanks for the question. hopefully I have explained it ok. This is a hard thing to understand. If you don't get it let me know and I will try to explain it in a different way.

will a ND filter help ?

will a ND filter help ?

Thanks!! You can spend a little or a lot, it really depends on the specific lens and brand. If you have some extra cash I think you would really like the effects you get with a wide angle lens. My thoughts are the more lenses the better. Keep in mind that used lenses are cheaper and can be just as good or better than a new lens. Shop around on Ebay or www.usedcameras.com and see what you can find. Also, Rokinon makes some awesome fast wide angle lenses. They don't have auto focus, but are getting rave reviews from the experts. I have a Rokinon and love it. Thanks for the comment Norbert! I made the purchase with a EFS 18-55mm good/bad? no idea. It takes great shots in the volleyball games of my middle son. When I first got it I went with my oldest son to the beach, he does bodyboard surfing, oh my, he could barely be seen. I then bought an EFS 55-250mm zoom lens and this one did much better. Later on, I purchased an 50 mm f/1.8, it takes great pictures, especially portraits and, does marvels in low light conditions.

I have a very tight budget and reading this posts was awesome. It makes me feel good with what I have, and probably will suffice for a while. I do this for a hobby but I'm very serious about it. I once went to a landscaping seminar and was recommended a wide-angle lens. I am sure they are out there somewhere, but on older lenses, and some newer ones there are guides on the lenses themselves that give you the info. However on most new lenses these guides are gone. But, on most cameras there are Depth of field preview buttons. When you press the depth of fiend button the lens "closes down" and will give you a good idea of what is in focus. There are general guidelines on what to use for certain situations though. If I am shooting a landscape I usually use f/22. If I am shooting a family I usually use f/11. If I am shooting a portrait I usually shoot wide open at f/1.4 or the widest aperture on my lens. Anyhow, if I were you I would practice and get to know what your lenses do and then you can make an educated guess when shooting. anyway, hope that helps. I'm new to using manual or partially manual settings on my camera, and I'm really trying to understand how best to set aperture for my shots. I understand what DOF means, but I still don't have a good grasp on how to estimate what aperture will be best for each situation. Is there such thing as a chart or diagram or something that would give me examples of various scenarios? If I can go from f/1.8 to f/32 (diff lenses of course) how can I estimate my results at f/8 vs. f/11 or f/22? or even f/32? What I mean is, what kind of distances are we talking about at each f-stop?
